HP 14s Review

Most individuals use laptops not just as entertainment devices but also as portable workstations they may transport from place to place. Laptops that don’t have the highest-end hardware but can nonetheless get the job done swiftly and efficiently It needs to be a compact device with reliable backup power. Not draining your financial resources is also very helpful. For Rs 65,999, HP’s new laptop, the HP 14s, aims to satisfy all of the aforementioned requirements. I was requested to evaluate a system, so here are my thoughts.

Computer and a keyboard

The HP 14s’s keyboard may be smaller than that of a standard laptop, but it’s still comfortable to use. The keystrokes are swift and compact. Fortunately, I didn’t have to spend much time getting accustomed to the controls. The keyboard has a backlight that illuminates the keys from behind. Light does seep in from the bottom, but it isn’t a problem when trying to find the right keys. The trackpad itself is somewhat cramped, and the buttons directly beneath it take up even more real estate. The responsiveness to touch and sensitivity are both satisfactory. If you want to get more done, I still recommend using a mouse.

Performance

The HP 14s has the most recent CPUs from Intel’s Ice Lake family. The i3 and i5 processors are both 10th generation, and I was given the i5 to test out. The Ice Lake line is constructed using a more compact 10nm design. When compared to the 14-nm Comet Lake chipsets, it is noticeably more power efficient, while it is slightly slower overall. The Intel Core i5-1035G1 operates at a respectable 3.6 GHz. Most consumers will be pleased with the machine’s performance. I use a lot of Chrome tabs and Microsoft Word on my HP 14s, and it never seems to slow down. This is made easier by the 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD, in addition to the 8GB of RAM.

Since there is no dedicated graphics processing unit (GPU), this laptop is not designed with gaming in mind. Intel Integrated Graphics is responsible for visual processing instead. The laptop performs admirably on the majority of tests administered to it. The system achieved a single-core score of 1,167 on Geekbench 5 and a multi-core score of 3,130. About as fast as a 10th-generation Ice Lake CPU would be expected to be. I put it through its paces under constant pressure by running the Cinebench R12 benchmark, which resulted in a score of 1,216. The laptop performed admirably, scoring 3,813 on PCMark 10, which indicates that it is suitable for use in a professional setting. The SSD and HDD both performed admirably in CrystalDiskMark, with read and write rates of 1,570 MBps and 941.30 MBps, respectively.

Design

If HP was planning on taking the 14s on the road, they did a great job. It is compact, with a lightweight plastic body. It’s light at just 1.5 kilograms. Even though it is just 14 inches in size, neither the keyboard nor the mouse feels cramped. The hinge, palm rest, and top all feature a glossy coating. The laptop can be opened with one hand, but only after some effort; the hinge appears to be of high quality. When the device is placed on a desk, the viewing angle of the screen is optimal at around 120 degrees. The keyboard is conveniently located next to the power button and the speaker grille. All the standard ports are available. There’s a Kensington lock and two card slots for microSD and Type-C connections on the left side. Two USB Type-A 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a SIM card tray can be found on the right side. The HP 14s is 4G-ready, so you can use it virtually everywhere there is cell service and no Wi-Fi connection. One of the best things about laptops is this, but we’ll get into that more in a little bit.

Display

The laptop’s display is a 14-inch IPS LCD panel screen running at a standard 60 Hz refresh rate and supporting Full High Definition (1,920 by 1,080) resolution. We have established this. This demographic is less likely to use their device for creative purposes like gaming or video editing, so it may not matter if the display is accurate or not. The HP 14s’s panel is nice, bright, and sharp for the budget, covering around 45% of the NTSC color gamut and peaking at an average of 280 nits. While some shade is preferable when using this outside, no other visual impairments are present. Bezels are the thick edges that surround a screen. There’s a video chat display up top.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a lightweight laptop that can get the job done, I highly recommend the HP 14s. The gadget may not look great or have the nicest screen, but it excels at what it was designed to do. If you plan on doing a lot of graphically intense work on your computer, the Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3i (review) is a fantastic option.
