Kodak’s Mini 3 Retro Portable Printer ($156.99) prints on 3-by-3-inch square media, unlike the Mini 2 HD Instant Photo Printer reviewed here in April 2018. Kodak printers, like the HP Sprocket Studio, employ dye-sublimation imaging instead of inkjet or zero-ink (Zink) processes. Dye-sub printers’ four-pass imaging process produces better images than Zink printers, and the Mini 3 Retro’s attractive output and inexpensive running costs make it a great take-it-anywhere photo printer and our newest Editors’ Choice winner.
Photo Quality
The Mini 3 Retro takes high-quality photos with vivid colours and fine detail. The dye-sub printer employs cyan, magenta, and yellow ink with a transparent coating to highlight the colours and protect the image from dust and fingerprints. Remember that while zero-ink technology has evolved, it still lacks dye-sublimation imaging’s quality. However, they looked decent compared to the others. The Kodak Mini 3 Retro prints well, is affordable, and allows borderless or bordered photos. Its square picture format is also unique. Users can determine if the 3-inch square format fits them.
Speed and cost per print
The Mini 3 Retro is faster and cheaper than its contemporaries. Borderless prints average 43 seconds, but bordered prints take only a few seconds longer. As expected, the last replacement media cartridge, which prints 30, 60, and 90, has the lowest cost per picture. Kodak estimates that each 90-pack print will cost 40 cents. Compact, colourful design
The Mini 3 Retro weighs under a pound and measures 1 by 5 by 4 inches. You may choose between white, yellow, or black and two bundles: the kit described here with 68 media sheets or a cheaper ($141.99) one with eight. Kodak is smaller than the HP Sprocket Studio and Canon Selphy CP1300 pocketable dye-sub photo printers. In contrast to those models’ 4-by-6-inch photos, it produces 3-inch-square photographs. Other than that, the Mini 3 Retro is straightforward. You can power and charge the printer using a micro USB plug on the back, and your printed photographs roll out of a slot on the front.
Mini 3 Retro Connection and Use
As with many photo printer applications, Mini 3 Retro works exclusively on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, not Windows or macOS laptops or desktops. First, link the device to your phone or tablet through Bluetooth, then download and install the Kodak Photo Printer app to print photographs from your device’s storage or a cloud site. Although the printer includes a micro USB connector for charging, it only supports Bluetooth. Kodak claims the in-built battery charges in 90 minutes and prints 25 times. Replacement cartridges come in 30, 60, and 90-sheet packs (ICRG-330, ICRG-360, and ICRG-390). Open the compartment door, slide out the old cartridge, and insert the new one.
