Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 Review: What Nobody Tells You Before Buying
Since there are a lot of budget gaming laptops on the market now, such as the ASUS TUF A15, the Acer Nitro 5, and the MSI GF63, I was familiar with what to expect from the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3. It represents Lenovo’s attempt at offering a low-budget alternative to anyone who ever asked: “Can I play games on this without crying?” And the short answer is that you can, with an important caveat. By the year 2026, this laptop will be offering discounted prices and the advantage of the solid Lenovo supply chain; however, it is definitely not competing with the Legion 5 and ASUS ROG products. It can be worth it if you know what you are buying.
Best for: Newcomers to PC gaming, college students gaming at 1080p medium settings with a limited budget.
Not best for: Competitive players, video creators, or those requiring true-to-life color accuracy.

Design & Build Quality
This chassis is all plastic, and it feels like one. The cover flexes under gentle pressure, and there is a slight sticky sensation on the bottom that attracts dirt easily. The hinge, however, feels well-built, with no movement after many months of testing. The deck does not flex while typing – something that matters much more to me than specifications. The build design is restrained for a gaming laptop – nothing flashy like RGB dragon logos or sharp vents meant to look “gamer.” At 5.1 lbs, it’s not exactly light, but I’ve handled heavier machines.
Display
This is where it really becomes difficult to make a case for the IdeaPad Gaming 3. The 120Hz is all well and good on paper, but when you consider the 45% NTSC color gamut and the 250-nit peak brightness, it makes for a bad combination that limits usage to gaming or streaming Netflix. The colors appear dull in comparison to even a MacBook or an affordable smartphone with an OLED screen. If you want to use it outdoors, think again because the sunlight will be reflected by the screen every single time. It performs well enough when it comes to gaming, and FreeSync prevents tearing.
Performance
The Ryzen 5 6600H with the RTX 3050 at 85W TDP is good enough for 1080p gaming on medium-high settings. Games such as Valorant, CS2, and Fortnite hit over 100 fps easily. For the heavier ones like Cyberpunk 2070, one needs to have the game on the medium preset to maintain the 60fps mark. With Cinebench R23, we see that 6600H scores between 10,000 and 11,000 on multicore tests, rivaling Intel’s i7-11800H processor. On its own, the 8 GB single-channel RAM hinders GPU performance – an extra 8GB stick is by far the best investment in the laptop under $30.
Battery Life
The 45Whr battery is pretty small for the standards of 2026. If you plan on using your device actively – browsing, watching YouTube, doing documents – then you will have 5-6 hours of usage on battery power until you need to plug it in. Playing games from battery power does not seem like a real use scenario, because you will get about 90 minutes of gaming at best without the 170W adapter plugged in.

Thermal Management & Fan Noise
CPU thermals turn out to be the worst-performing aspect of the IdeaPad Gaming 3 model. It regularly reaches up to 90-95 degrees C under continuous gaming pressure, which results in the fans kicking in at high volume levels to balance the temperatures. While the keyboard itself does get warm, particularly in the upper central area, the WASD section remains comfortable. Dual heat pipes and a dual fan system are used here, providing decent temperature control but not the silent kind. It cannot be considered a laptop for quiet gaming environments such as libraries. Repasting the CPU helps reduce temperatures by 5-8 degrees C.

Final Verdict
The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 may not be my recommendation if I’m asked which laptop I would pass on to anyone and say that’s the one. However, I could confidently say this about it: If you get it at the slashed price of $699 and spend an extra $50 getting it upgraded with RAM and a low-budget 1TB SSD, then you have yourself a decent gaming laptop for less than $800. This is definitely a good deal for a beginner gamer and should definitely be bought if you’re not interested in having high-quality graphics on your games.
