Asus ROG 9 Pro Review: Built for Serious Mobile Gamers

The Asus ROG 9 Pro has much to offer, but can it really perform well with serious gamers? The majority of gaming phones are screaming with aggressive designs that will make you look like you are carrying a toy. I needed a phone that would support my 3-hour PUBG games without slowing down, would not overheat my hand, and would not run out before dinner.

That is why I used it as my daily phone for three weeks. I noticed right away that this isn’t your typical gaming phone. The main thing that irritated me initially was that the learning curve on Armoury Crate is a reality. But once past that? This phone rarely disappointed.

Now, let’s get into what is really important.

Quick Verdict for Asus ROG 9 Pro

Not Suitable ForCasual users, camera-first buyers, or anyone on a tight budget

The Asus ROG 9 Pro is a serious gaming machine with a serious price tag. If mobile gaming is your priority, it delivers. If it’s not, look elsewhere.

Design and Build

I never expected it to feel as refined while I was picking up the Asus ROG 9 Pro for the very first time. The matte nano-texture finish is fingerprint-resistant, and actually feels like decent in the hands. Grip is hard in long sessions, even without a case. It can be felt at 227g and is never uncomfortable.

The AniMe Vision LED panel on the back? Genuinely cool. The first week, I wore it and only showed it.

I felt a minor inconvenience; the phone is too wide to use with one hand. It is a stretch to get to the top half. Not a dealbreaker, but worth mentioning.

Display and Gaming Experience

Asus ROG 9 Pro display quality

The 185Hz display was a surprise to me when I first opened PUBG Mobile. The movement was unnaturally smooth as though the game had been enhanced. I noticed this instantly when switching from my previous phone. COD Mobile at its fullest? Zero stutter, zero frame drops.

The screen is where Genshin Impact is shining. Colors are bright, the blacks are deep, and the brightness of 2500 nits was maintained even in the direct sunlight. Playing on this screen is really different.

A limitation to consider, at 185Hz, battery drain increases significantly. I maintained it at 120Hz to use it every day to strike a balance between performance and battery life.

Performance and Gaming

Performance and Gaming

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is capable of taking whatever I throw at it without any hesitation. Alternating between Discord, YouTube, and a live PUBG game, no lag, no reload, nothing. Multitasking on 24GB RAM is almost absurdly good.

Sessions of heavy gaming are always smooth. I did not experience the phone struggling at any point.

With that said, I started experiencing some heat accumulation along the back panel after about 45 minutes of Genshin Impact on max settings. Not painful, uncomfortable. The AeroActive Cooler X Pro lowered the temperatures quickly; however, the use of an accessory to control the heat over time is a consideration that buyers must consider.

Battery Life

The 5800mAh battery is good for daily use. Browsing, calls, YouTube, and social media kept me busy all day with 20% to spare. Normal use is truly comfortable.

Gaming is a different story. Three hours of continuous PUBG Mobile drained roughly 55% battery.  Controllable, yet not impressive on a phone of this price.

The irritating experience was a late-night session when I forgot to turn on bypass charging, ran the battery to 15%, and had to wait 40 minutes to get back in. Small mistake, real impact.

Charging 65W is quick. That was never a letdown.

Camera

Camera

I was surprised by the Asus ROG 9 Pro camera during the day. Photos were crisp, colors were natural, and the 32MP telephoto dealt with distance better than I had anticipated from a gaming phone.

When I took it in low light, I felt it was the area where the Asus ROG 9 Pro is weak. Night shots are quickly losing their detail, and noise is noticeably creeping in. It will not substitute a serious camera phone.

To content creators who game and sometimes shoot, it works. For serious photography? The ROG 9 Pro was not designed to do that.

Real World Usage

I tested the Asus ROG 9 Pro in three other situations apart from gaming.

In the morning, when I was going to work, I found it a bit weird to hold the phone in one hand to look at a map and listen to music at the same time. This phone is really big. I could not forget that.

At an outdoor cafe, I saw that the screen was really bright at 2500 nits. It was easy to see in direct sunlight. I was. Browsing on it, and I didn’t have to squint at all.

Later, in the evening, I played games for two hours straight. Had a video call. The phone did both things fine. It was really smooth when I switched between gaming and the video call. I was surprised because this phone seems mainly for gaming.

Pros and Cons

ProsCons
185Hz display makes gaming visibly smootherGets warm after 45 minutes of heavy gaming
Bypass charging protects the battery during long sessionsThe wide frame makes one-handed use uncomfortable
24GB RAM handles multitasking without any hesitationLow-light camera loses detail fast
AniMe Vision panel adds personality without looking cheapArmoury Crate has a steep learning curve for new users
Daylight visibility is genuinely better than most flagshipsAeroActive Cooler needed for extended sessions, sold separately

Comparison with Other Phones

According to my experience, this phone is superior in gaming compared to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra but inferior in camera.

Performance in games is smoother compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but the iPhone is better in terms of app optimization and camera quality.

This phone is more reasonable if you are more concerned with gaming. Those phones are more suitable for use as a camera and for daily use.

Final Verdict

Three weeks of use of the Asus ROG 9 Pro have allowed me to say that it does what it promises. The performance is excellent, the show is really addictive, and bypass charging is a feature that I never knew I needed before.

It’s not perfect. Heat management requires an accessory that the camera will not impress photographers, and the price will require dedication.

Buy it without any doubt, in case you are a serious mobile gamer who spends real time in PUBG, COD, or Genshin Impact. Unless you are a regular gamer and the quality of the camera is important to you, then you should spend your money elsewhere.
