Dell Precision 7680 Review: What 2 Months of Real Work Taught Me
After trying out the Dell Precision 7680 as my workhorse for CAD rendering and other heavy-data-related tasks for a couple of months, operating fully on this machine, my opinion is considerably different from what the specification sheet would have you believe.
After upgrading from an HP ZBook Fury 16 G10, I expected a lot from a 16-inch mobile workstation that’s priced over $2,400. What I did get is a good machine that not only handles professional workloads like 3D modeling, video encoding, and large dataset processing very effectively, but also features some of the computer industry jokes that Dell’s marketing rarely mentions.
If you’re a creative professional, engineer, or data scientist, and you are in the dilemma of whether the 7680 will fit in your planned budget, it’s a straightforward, honest review that you can rely on.

Design & Build Quality

The 7680 really feels like a product that will last as long as your mortgage. Both the lid and bottom panel are made of metal, while the base material is a kind of rubberized high-grade plastic mixed with carbon fiber — Dell describes it as a “carbon fiber reinforced composite, ” and it is really tough. There is no give at all in the keyboard area, and the lid can be opened with just one hand, which may seem like a small thing until you have experienced the cheaper workstations that need a two-hand pry.
At about 2.6 kg, it’s not a lightweight, but it’s still quite thin for what it contains inside — the 22, 27mm profile accommodates vapor chamber cooling and up to a 135W GPU TGP.

An 83 Wh battery does sound good on paper. But in practice, battery life in the real world is probably the most frequently criticized element of this laptop, and the critics have a point. If you have the brightness of the display at a moderate level, and only do light office work on integrated graphics, you will get something between 2.5 and 3.5 hours. The moment you turn on the dGPU for any reason, that number is going to drop drastically.

The Dell Precision 7680 is, in fact, an extremely robust mobile workstation for professionals who are almost always hooked up to a power source.
