Design and display

Honor MagicBook 14

The sleek aluminum chassis of the Honour MagicBook 15 laptop is new. The laptop is 16.9mm thick and weighs 1.53kg. The laptop feels hefty despite the company’s claims of portability. The colour is mystic ilver. Blue rings on all four edges and a diamond-cut waistline give it a unique and classy appeal. The Honour MagicBook’s flat top includes Azure Blue Honour letters. The ventilation grilles and side-firing speakers are on the bottom. The left edge of the laptop contains USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and USB Type-C charging ports. The right edge has the HDMI port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Honour MagicBook 15 contains a concealed webcam. The keyboard’s top row houses the webcam. Pressing the button releases the webcam. The positioning hinders video calls and facial recognition.

A Keyboard and Mouse

HONOR MagicBook 15

Honor has left out a full-sized keyboard and numpad on its 15-inch model. This makes the keys space out, and it takes some time to get used to typing. After learning it, using the keyboard was easy. Travel was shallow, and keys were not tactile, but they worked. I’m typing this article using the MagicBook 15, which has been enjoyable. I regret the lack of illumination, which would have been helpful at night. The webcam is located on the Function Row keyboard and may be accessed by hitting the key. The webcam is pointing up your nose, which I think is horrible. Privacy-conscious people may prefer this implementation.

Cost and Competition

Testing configuration: AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with integrated AMD Radeon GPU, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 15.6-inch 1,920 x 1,080 IPS-type LCD panel, Windows 11 Home. Price: £650 You’re looking at the Honour MagicBook 15, the only one available. That specification is typical for a laptop at this price point in 2022, but the lack of memory is surprising. 8GB of RAM should be enough to write, browse the web, and crop a few photos, but 512GB of storage is generous for £650. As with all Huawei and Honour machines, it’s divided into two partitions: 120GB for Windows installation and apps and 337GB for data.

This matches its primary competitor, the Huawei MateBook D 15. The D 15 has the same elegant metal casing, is approximately the same price, and has the same specs (15.6-inch Full HD display, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD), but a weaker Ryzen 3500U engine and an older Wi-Fi module. The smaller Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 is more elegant, with a smaller 12.4-inch touchscreen, and will be a budget laptop benchmark in 2022, giving high performance at a cheap price. It cannot rival the MagicBook 15 for value and performance per pound.

The Honour MagicBook 15 (8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) has the most similar specs and costs £729. The Acer Swift 3 (2022) is another great bargain laptop, and 14-inch models cost roughly £700. You receive an Intel Core i5-1135G7, 8 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD for your money. For £100 more, the Swift 3 has 16GB of RAM for working. The HP Pavilion 14, another outstanding bargain laptop, features a 14-inch touchscreen display but costs £550, less than the Honour MagicBook 15. You’ll get a laptop with an Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD.

Keyboard, Touchpad

HONOR MagicBook 15

The MagicBook 15 is a minimalist masterpiece with an all-metal design, a smooth matte finish, and a 15.6-inch display with tiny bezels. The webcam is hidden on the keyboard. It weighs 1.54kg and can be picked up with one hand. While parts of the keyboard deck can get heated when performing multiple tasks, the keyboard and wristrest keep cool. A good assortment of physical connectivity. The right side has a USB-A 2.0 connector and 3.5mm headset jack; the left side has a Type-C USB port that enables data and charging but neither Thunderbolt nor DisplayPort.

Battery and performance

HONOR MagicBook 15

With last year’s AMD Ryzen 5 3500U CPU, the Honour MagicBook 15 looks to challenge Intel. AMD’s current 4000-series CPUs are generally accurate, but the MagicBook’s is closer to Intel’s 8th-gen Kaby Lake lineup, which was a step ahead. The MagicBook 15’s cheap price is due to AMD’s GPU and CPU. That makes the laptop slow or inconvenient even for moderately processor-intensive applications. Normal daily duties run smoothly. This means editing a PowerPoint and moving between PDFs with 10 Chrome tabs open in two windows. A regular business or college day.
