Compared to other true wireless earbuds, such as the Apple AirPods, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 sounds significantly better and lasts longer. The German audio company has been a reliable name in the world of over-ear headphones for some time now, and it has expanded into the realm of true wireless earbuds with the debut of the highly successful Momentum True Wireless late last year.

To compete with the best earbuds and make an impression in the world of the best noise-cancelling headphones, Sennheiser has supplied its popular noise-cancelling earbuds. It’s comparable to the AirPods Pro and the Sony WF-1000XM3. However, it’s smaller and has a longer battery life.

Cost and accessibility

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2

At $299 / £279 / AU$499.95, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are significantly more expensive than the Sony WF-1000XM3, the best true wireless earbuds on the market. It’s the same price that the first-generation Momentum True Wireless earbuds were when they came out last year, so if you’re trying to save money, you might want to look into the original model.

Design

Sennheiser Momentum 2

If you’re on the fence about spending this much on headphones, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are worth trying. They’re well-built and have the high-end finish you’d expect at this price point. The new true wireless earbuds have rounded shapes and metallic housings that are touch sensitive, similar to the original design. The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 have a silver finish that makes them look modern and fashionable without being flashy. These earbuds are stylish down to the last detail, featuring gold-plated charging ports and LEDs to show pairing status. The charging case is just as high-end, with a modern grey woven finish, a USB-C charging connector, and a button that, when pressed, displays the case’s battery life as a red, orange, or green LED.

Connectivity and battery life

With a battery life of seven hours from the buds themselves and an additional 21 hours from the charging case, these headphones are significantly more durable than their predecessors. That’s double the time of the average true wireless earbuds and makes these headphones competitive with the best of the bunch in 2020. Support for the most recent wireless streaming standard, Bluetooth 5.1, made them easy to pair with our smartphone; and compatibility with Qualcomm’s aptX codec means you can stream Hi-Res Audio wirelessly.

High-Quality Sound

Sennheiser claims that the 7mm dynamic drivers in the Momentum True Wireless 2 will produce “outstanding stereo sound, with deep bass, natural mids, and clear, detailed treble.” The Momentum True Wireless 2 did an excellent job balancing out SBTRKT’s Wildfire ft. Little Dragon’s synthesised bass, clear and silky vocals, and textured highs were forceful without being shrill. Moving on to Kelela’s Rewind, we were blown away by the bass’s brawny, chest-thumping ferocity, which is not something one would generally associate with truly wireless earphones.

However, the track’s luscious RnB vocals and clattering hi-hats prove that the mid and treble ranges were addressed too. Although we wouldn’t say they sound as tightly controlled as the Sony WF-1000XM3, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are a worthy competitor because of their expansive soundstage and abundance of precise detail. The noise cancellation is also inferior to Sony’s headphones. We noticed that while they may reduce some outside noise, a significant amount still gets through; nevertheless, when you put in some headphones and crank up the tunes, the world seems to disappear.

Verdict

There’s no time to wait in the fast-paced world of wireless headphones. As more and more models are released, battery life and available features continue to improve. We are pleased to report that the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2s have matured to meet our expectations. They have improved comfort and usability over their forerunners, as well as longer battery life and built-in noise cancellation. They’re pleasant to be around, and you can listen to them for hours without boredom. Your hearing will benefit greatly from spending a little more money.
