The Canon EOS 200D, the world’s lightest APS-C DSLR with a vari-angle screen, sits between the EOS 1300D and the EOS 760D and 800D. It’s for those wanting to buy their first DSLR and those who want to learn more about photography beyond a camera phone or compact camera. It follows the Canon EOS 100D in being tiny, lightweight, and portable. Though small for a DSLR, the EOS 200D has many functionality. It has Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a vari-angle screen, and Wi-Fi, like most Canon DSLRs.

Canon EOS 200D Review

Canon upgraded the EOS 100D’s 18MP APS-C CMOS chip with a 24.2MP sensor in the EOS 200D. Canon’s latest DIGIC 7 image processor works with this sensor, which is identical to the EOS 77D and 800D. Looking at its specs, the new CPU has increased continuous shooting speed to 5fps, 1fps quicker than the EOS 100D.

Like the EOS 800D, the Canon EOS 200D has an ISO range of 100-25,600, which can be increased to 51,200 in ‘H’. For those who prefer the camera to choose the ideal sensitivity setting, it has an Auto ISO setting with a ceiling of ISO 25,600. Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system was inevitable and is now available in the EOS 200D, Canon’s cheapest DSLR. It introduces high-performance Servo AF tracking and eliminates the languid autofocus performance in live view mode of earlier Canon DSLRs without this groundbreaking technology.

Canon EOS 200D Review

Canon has made many physical changes since the 100D, some more noticeable than others. A notable distinction is the handgrip material. The rubberised texture is smoother and less sticky than on the EOS 100D. I loved the EOS 100D’s handgrip for feel and handling, but it didn’t equal other Canon DSLRs. Although the Canon EOS 200D’s leatherette grip is less grippy than its predecessor, it is more consistent with other Canon models and looks better. The polycarbonate resin and carbon-and-glass-fibre body can withstand daily bumps and knocks. Though it’s not as sturdy as Canon’s more expensive models, the EOS 77D or 80D will quickly impress you with its build quality.

It’s a compact camera, but its proportions are slightly larger than the EOS 100D’s. The size is 122.4×92.6×69.8mm, compared to 116.8×90.7x69mm. It’s smaller than Canon’s EOS 1300D, so you’ll want to try it first to see whether it’s perfect for you. Large hands may find the grip too small, but small hands will be okay with it. Your little finger may drop off the grip if you have medium-sized hands.

The layout of buttons and controls is mostly unchanged, with a few modifications. Live-view, playback, and exposure-compensation buttons are together, and the quick-menu button is again in the centre of a small D-pad. AF point selection, exposure-lock, and playback zoom keys are to the right of the thumb rest. The top plate scroll controls aperture and shutter speed when shooting in aperture or shutter priority modes. In the manual way, press and hold the AV button at the back to adjust the aperture with this dial. This becomes second nature after a time.
