The Epson LabelWorks LW-PX700 label printer is ideal for job-site industrial label printing, with or without PC printing. The LW-PX700 Deluxe Kit, which includes a hard-shell carrying bag, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and more, costs $195.95. The kit easily becomes our new Editors’ Choice winner for standalone moderate- to heavy-duty industrial label printing, leaving the Brady BMP41 Label Printer Voice and Data Communications Starter Kit ($470) as our favourite extreme-duty label maker.

Holding Handle

Due to its 2.75-pound weight and handle on one side, the LW-PX700 might be used as a kettlebell. Similar in design to the BMP41 and Brady BMP21-Plus ($195), its size fluctuates in every dimension depending on where you measure it. The maximum depth is 11.7 inches on a level surface with the keypad facing up. Printer width ranges from 5.4 inches at the 3.25-inch LCD screen to 3.75 inches at the narrowest handle. The top surface slopes down from 3.5 inches near the screen to 1.75 inches at the handle, making the screen easier to read when the device is on a desk or table. The keypad’s design and slope make entering text and commands easier. Though you may hold the printer in both hands for thumb typing, I found it too hefty to hold for more than a minute or two.

The printer is black except for a red battery cover on the bottom and a red backdrop that highlights the black QWERTY keypad keys. There are a few white keys for particular functionality and lime-green accents for the print key and label slot. Special functions include recording up to 100 label definitions to memory, retrieving them, and defining patch panel labels, self-laminating tapes for cables, flag labels (with a little flag poking out), and more.

How To Setup Epson LabelWorks LW-PX700 Deluxe Kit

Installing a tape cartridge and the rechargeable battery (if you have the kit) or six AA batteries is a physical setup. Connect to an AC outlet to charge the lithium-ion battery. Epson says the battery can print five 30-foot cartridges’ worth of labels on a single charge, so it’s unlikely to run out on a job. You can buy a $79 backup, carry AA cells, or use AC power, and the 12-foot cord gives you good mobility. Note that $115.95 for the printer and $79 for a battery equals the full kit, which includes a USB cable for connecting to a PC, the hard carrying case ($59.95 separately), and two industrial magnets ($21) that screw into the printer’s underside to let you stick it to any metal surface. Unless you’re sure you’ll never need the battery and other supplies, the kit is the best option at these costs.

Over 100 Tape Types

Epson provides 118 LW-PX700 tape cartridges. About half are 30-foot-long, conventional plastic (polyester) tapes in 4mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 18mm, and 24mm widths with different print and background colours. Cartridges cost $20.85 for 12mm and smaller widths and $24.85 for the two largest. All are continuous rolls; therefore, label costs vary by size. Silver matte, strong-adhesive, vinyl, magnetic, heat-shrink tube, fluorescent, reflective, and self-laminating overwrap tapes for cables with a transparent, unprintable region to overlap the printed text are further options.

Category-specific specialty tapes vary in length, price, and selection. Others are shorter and cost more than regular tapes at 30-foot length and per-width.

Print from a PC or printer

Printing is flexible with the LW-PX700. Epson’s Label Editor 2.04 is the latest Windows programme for laptops and desktops. I’ve said in prior Epson label printer reviews that the software is straightforward to use and one of the most capable labelling programmes. Both files include a standard driver for printing labels from almost any Windows programme, and users of Epson’s Label Editor Professional 1.03 for Windows can download it instead. MacOS doesn’t support printing.

Starting the LW-PX700 as a solo printer was harder. However, it didn’t take much time to figure out how to store and retrieve label definitions or use built-in features like bar codes and QR codes, vertical or horizontal printing, and defining up to 50 labels with different text and lengths to print with a single button press. Mirror labels and 859 industrial and professional symbols from 27 menu categories are available. Epson provides a guide sheet with symbols in each category to help you find the one you wish to print.
