A54 Samsung: Introducing The New Mid-Range Champ

Samsung’s Galaxy A series, and its A5X smartphones in particular, are among the greatest mid-range phones on the market. In previous generations, the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A51 were among the best-selling phones in the world, making the 2023 Samsung Galaxy A54 5G all the more notable.

In terms of features and performance, the midrange Samsung Galaxy A54 5G rivals premium phones. I can scarcely distinguish this $449 gadget from the $999 Galaxy S23 Plus unless I take them up off a table.  Naturally, they differ in construction. S23 Plus features the sleekness and robust metal frame of a $1,000 phone. Style-wise, the A54 falls short. They’re remarkably comparable in daily use. Reading emails, browsing Instagram, and driving around town seem the same. The camera is the only difference I notice.

A Quick Dive into Power-Packed Performance and Features

Samsung showcased the Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G together a few days shy of a year after the Galaxy A53’s launch, hoping to revive the company’s mid-range phone market presence by offering trickle-down premium features and long battery life in a stylish package that costs half as much as other flagships. As the number implies, the A54 is the more powerful, better-built, and more capable of these two current A-series phones.

Details, appearance, feel

A54 Samsung

Samsung A54 has several good features for its budget. My 128GB storage 8GB RAM model weighs over 200 grams, is 6.4 inches diagonally, and has a 120Hz-refreshed 1080x2340px 403ppi display. A mid-range Mali-G68 MP5 GPU and four 2.4GHz A78 and four 2.0GHz A55 cores make up the CPU. Good for most practical uses. My phone is a hybrid SIM. The second SIM slot may hold a nano-SIM or micro-SD XC card (rotated 90 degrees). I don’t care about Bluetooth 5.3, but the dual-band Wi-Fi antenna supports 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/6, NFC, fingerprint reader, compass, and more.

The triple back camera has 50MP f/1.8 wide-angle, 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide, and 5MP f/2.4 macro lenses. A 32MP f/2.2 selfie camera is on the front for undue self-importance. The phone can record 4K at 30 FPS or 1080p at 30 or 60 FPS. Stereo speakers but no 3.5mm audio jack. With a 5000mAh battery, it charges via 25W USB-C. We’ll see how useful this block of molecules and electrons is. This phone seems like everything someone needs for normal use.

Sleek Elegance Meets Cutting-Edge Innovation

A54 Samsung

The Galaxy S22 Ultra had its design language last year, but most of the company’s 2022 smartphones used the Galaxy S21 series’ contour-cut camera aesthetics as with the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus; the Galaxy A54 now has the Ultra’s floating camera design.

The A53’s elevated camera module was stylish (I preferred it to the S22 and S22 Plus’s complete contour-cut style). Still, the A54’s revamped look is even cleaner, although at the loss of some originality compared to market rivals and predecessors. To compensate, this year’s model comes in more vibrant colors, including Awesome Lime and Awesome Violet, while Awesome Graphite and Awesome White are more muted. After comparing the A54 to its launch sibling, the A34, I was envious of the latter’s pearlescent finish, which adds rainbow hues to the phone’s back when held against the light. The flat colors behind the Gorilla Glass 5 on the A54 line only catch fingerprints and smudges.

The A54 is somewhat thicker than its predecessor because of its smaller display, but its weight is more perceptible. The A54 gained 13 grams between generations, putting it beyond the 200-gram barrier (202 grams) where a phone’s weight feels substantial in hand, especially for its screen size. However, it’s easy to grip and feels significant (even if the plastic frame is bulky), with IP67 dust and water resistance for further security.

Stunning Display of the Samsung Galaxy A54

The A54’s display is identical to its predecessor; however, Samsung made tiny but significant improvements to improve viewing. From 20:9 to 19.5:9, the A54’s Full HD+ display is 0.1 inches smaller at 6.4 inches. Usually, a smaller screen at the same resolution would imply a sharper image across generations, but the aspect ratio causes this size difference; therefore, image sharpness remains similar.

The phone’s ‘Infinity-O display’ is only the punch-hole front-facing camera at the top-center, while a thick bezel (which widens along its bottom border) separates the frame from the display pixels. The Super AMOLED display at play has superb contrast and brilliant colors, and this year, it has Vision Booster innovation for more accurate viewing in various ambient lighting settings. Speaking of illumination, the A54’s screen has a 200-nit boost to peak brightness, now 1,000, improving outdoor visibility significantly over the A53 and its predecessors. Locking the phone at 60Hz saves battery, but its variable refresh rate lets it scale up to 120Hz or down (it has a 240Hz touch response rate, which is great for gaming).

Seamless Performance and Enhanced Capabilities

The One UI 5.1 experience atop Android 13 should be familiar to Samsung Galaxy users, with squircle icons, Samsung apps sitting alongside Google apps like the Galaxy Store and Google Play Store, and a few handy extras like Edge Panels, which can be swiped out to access favorite apps and contacts, and even pairs of apps for instant split-screen multitasking. The A54 lets you choose which Samsung apps to install during setup, so the Samsung Browser and Samsung Calculator aren’t required. Still, there are a few pre-loaded third-party apps that could be considered bloatware and must be removed manually after setup (Booking.com and TikTok in the UK).

One UI’s visual language is difficult to understand for those coming from Pixel, Motorola, or iOS, but once you do, it’s fun, full-featured, and powerful. The A54’s improved haptic feedback system mimics flagship phones like the Galaxy S23, OnePlus 11, and Xiaomi 13 Pro, sending precise vibrations for everything from unlocking to zooming in during camera use.

Advanced Camera Delivers Stunning Imagery

A54 Samsung

Samsung has always prioritized the camera on its Galaxy A5X handsets, and the A54’s 50MP f/1.8 sensor is a good upgrade from its predecessor’s 64MP sensor. The 1/1.56-inch sensor, with 1µm pixels (up from 0.8µm) and improved OIS range (1.5 degrees, up from 0.95), results in better image capture, especially in low light, despite a slight resolution drop. On the A54, Samsung’s strong connection with social applications like Snapchat lets you take better Snap filter photos in the camera’s ‘Fun’ shooting mode.

Samsung Galaxy A54 Extended Battery Life for Seamless Mobile Usage

A54 Samsung

Samsung’s Galaxy A53 and A54 come with a USB-C cable, SIM tool, and papers but no power adapter, as with the company’s flagship phones. The A54’s 25W fast-charging speeds match the Galaxy S23’s, which Samsung claims means a full charge in 82 minutes or less. In my testing, the phone consistently reached 100% charge at exactly the 82-minute mark when using a compatible Samsung charger. Samsung claims the Galaxy A54 can last two days on a single charge in typical use because of its hardware and 5,000mAh battery. I expected the two-day objective to be ambitious, but the phone still performs well, providing six hours of screen-on time per charge, enough for most users to last a day and a half.

Should I Buy a Samsung A54?

What did my review make you think? Let me clarify. Choosing the Samsung A54 was a tradeoff because it lacks an audio jack. Nice camera, decent pricing, and specs. The user import/migration procedure was humiliating. It works, but it took hours to customize the phone. I spent hours cleaning, purging, and polishing since I didn’t like the default programs and choices. Ergonomics are mediocre.

The phone performs well once tamed; however, the battery might last longer. Many operating systems and software niggles bother me, and I’m not sure I’ll ever get beyond them. Though attractive and powerful, this item lacks appeal. However, it will work fine as a cheap phone for light use. That sums up my early device experience. The A54 offers a lot for its money. Nice camera, audio, and five years of support. If you’re a privacy-savvy techie, you’ll need to spend a lot of time undoing defaults to make your system comply.
