Build Quality

In the upper right area of the lid, the word “Lenovo” is written in a small font. The lid is made of a dark silver metal. The back of the device is similarly designed and built, and other than the necessary Microsoft logo, it doesn’t have any annoying stickers on it. Instead of the thick metal plate used in the XPS series, a thin metal sheet covers the top. This lets the screen bend some when pressure is put on the right and left sides. When you open it, you’ll see a keyboard of the same colour with a number pad and black lighting that you can change from off to low to high.

Design

Looking at the laptop from the side, you can see that the front and back edges tilt similarly. It is thinner and lighter than the 15-inch Asus VivoBook S510, which weighs 3.6 pounds and is 0.7 inches thick. The 14-inch IdeaPad 720S is 3.3 pounds and 0.6 inches wide. The 13-inch Dell XPS 13 (2.7 pounds, 0.6 inches) and Samsung Notebook 9 (1.8 pounds, 0.6 inches) are, as expected, lighter. The IdeaPad is small and lightweight, but it has a lot of ports.

Show off

Lenovo Ideapad 720s-15

The IdeaPad 720S’s 14-inch screen is sunny, full of colour, and slightly off. I saw an orange fire wave in a video for Thor: Ragnarok, along with Thor’s red war paint and Hulk’s green skin. This 1920 x 1080 screen is so clear that I could see every colour in Bruce Banner’s battle suit. But I don’t like how lighter tones tend to show up yellow. You can see this in the backgrounds of some YouTubers and Google Docs.

Our colourimeter says this about the IdeaPad 720S: it shows 105% of the sRGB range. The average score for thin and light computers is 101%. The XPS 13 with 1080p screen gets 94%, and the VivoBook S510 receives 82%. The Notebook 9 has 118% more colours than the previous model. The IdeaPad 720S is close, even though it was yellow. On the Delta-E test, it got a score of 0.3, where 0 is perfect. The Notebook 9 got 0.2, and that’s about the same. It’s better than the average of 2.9, the XPS 13 got 1.3, and the VivoBook S510 got 6.6.

Sound recording

In our medium-sized meeting room, the IdeaPad 720S’s JBL speakers played Tyler, The Creator’s “Who Dat Boy.” Tyler and A$AP sing together. Rocky had clear singing, intense high-pitched synths, and sharp drums. Lenovo gives you the choice of Dolby Audio, which is helpful.

How it Works

The Intel Core i5-7200U CPU and 8GB RAM in the IdeaPad 720S made it easy to switch between tasks. I didn’t notice any lag when I split my screen between a 1080p YouTube movie and 12 Chrome tabs, such as Slack, TweetDeck, and Google Docs. Those websites were fast, for sure. That score is about the same as the XPS 13’s (7,287 points) with the same specs (Core i5-7200U, 8GB RAM), but it’s lower than the VivoBook S510’s (7,593 points) and the Samsung Notebook 9’s (8,410 points).

With a speed of 254 MB/s, the IdeaPad 720S 256GB NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD copied a DVD’s worth of media in 20 seconds. This is faster than the average of 218 MBps for this group, the Notebook 9’s 212 MBps from the 256GB SSD, and the VivoBook S510’s 96 MBps. The 256GB SSD in the XPS 13 ran this test at 339.31 MBps.

In the end

Lenovo Ideapad 720s-15

The $909 IdeaPad 720S is an outstanding laptop because it looks good, has a bright screen, good speakers, and a large keyboard. Suppose this laptop’s battery could last longer than 8 hours. A different XPS 13 with the same specs costs $190 more but has a longer battery life of more than 5 hours.
