The latest version of Apple’s iOS, 17.2, has begun to be loaded onto eligible iPhones. In addition to addressing various issues, the most recent software update for iPhones brings new capabilities. These include the Journal app, improved Weather and Messages, and the ability to take spatial video on the iPhone 15 Pro series. Users on iOS 17.1.2 or earlier receive a 1.5 GB update.

Spatial video recording is one of several new features in iOS 17.2. This lets users record 3D film on the fly and works with future Vision Pro VR gear.

The iPhone 15 Pro series uses the LiDAR sensor to capture 3D video with both the main and ultra-wide-angle cameras. The iPhone can shoot 3D videos, but hardware restrictions prevent native viewing. Apple improved the telephoto lens to take speedier photos. You can now program the new action button on the iPhone 15 Pro series to instantly translate sentences, among other new capabilities.

Similarly, all iPhones running iOS 17.2, including older devices like the iPhone XS/XR and the iPhone SE 2020, will have access to Journal, the free journaling software that was initially introduced at WWDC 2023. Additional security features for the Journal app include support for Face ID and Touch ID. If you own an iPhone 13, 14, or 15 model year and have an iOS 17.2 device, you can now charge your phone quickly with a 15W charger that isn’t MagSafe certified, thanks to the Qi2 wireless charging standard.

A revamped TV interface and the ability to swiftly switch between numerous profiles are two new features of the tvOS 17.2 update that is now rolling out to Apple TV.
