Sofia Coppola’s new film Priscilla sheds light on Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley’s marriage
Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter Sofia Coppola, recently talked about her new film ‘Priscilla,’ which is about Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley’s marriage. Coppola emphasizes her lack of knowledge about Priscilla’s story and her desire to portray her as a full human being. She reflects on growing up with a sense of celebrity and the distinction between public and private personas. In previous films, such as ‘Lost In Translation’ and ‘The Bling Ring,’ the director has explored fame. Coppola addresses the difficulties of depicting a living person’s story as well as the responsibility to balance dark and light moments in the film. Coppola’s film “Elvis and Me,” based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir, deals with one of the most famous marriages in American showbiz. While there have been many films about one of the most influential musicians of all time and his enormous persona, this may be the first time his marriage is front and center.
“We know a lot about him, but we haven’t heard her side yet. So I think understanding her as a person was interesting to me,” Coppola said at a round table discussion with PTI.
As the daughter of the man behind “The Godfather” series and “Apocalypse Now,” she said she was always aware of the distinction between how people behaved in public and when they were not in the spotlight.
Coppola talked about Elvis’s fame and said, “I’m always interested in different aspects of what appears to be a fantasy on the surface, and then the human reality that everyone struggles with… “Fame does not shield you from the human struggles that everyone faces,” she added.
Movie:
The film starts with shots of Elvis Presley’s Graceland estate in Memphis, as well as Priscilla applying her famous winged eyeliner, hairspray, and make-up. Coppola explained that the idea behind the first scene was to use a familiar image of the character before delving into the story. Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi star in a story that begins with Priscilla Beaulieu meeting Elvis Presley for the first time at a party in Germany when she was 14 and he was 24. Coppola’s film then depicts Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage to one of the world’s most famous men, painting a portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.
Sofia Coppola’s other remarkable works:
Previously, Coppola’s movies highlighted several celebrities’s real-life struggles in the cinematic world. Her remarkable work such as “Lost In Translation,” which revolved around the loneliness of an actor in a culturally different country, “Mary Antoinette,” a biopic on France’s last queen, or “The Bling Ring,” a story inspired by a true incident of a group of celebrity-obsessed teenagers burgling celebrity homes.
“Priscilla,” a MUBI release in collaboration with PVR INOX Pictures, is currently playing in movie theatres across India.
