The 13-pound JBL Boombox is loud, bass-y (if you want), sounds fantastic at all volumes, and is straightforward. You may use it as a power bank. This giant Bluetooth speaker combines the legendary JBL sound with impressive volume and extended playback times.JBL Boombox 2
The JBL Boombox booms and more. It’s the loudest and best-sounding portable Bluetooth speaker I’ve tried. It is impressive, considering it uses waterproof materials and has an IPX7 rating, which sometimes hinders sound reproduction. The large, portable JBL Boombox 2 Bluetooth speaker has deep bass and high volumes. Also pricey at $499.95. Purists may not appreciate the speaker’s enhanced bass and sculpted highs, but big-sound aficionados will. If you want an outdoor, waterproof party system, the Boombox 2 is a good choice. You can find speakers with better sound at this price.

A Sonic Powerhouse Wrapped in Sleek and Rugged Design
The 13-pound, 10.1-by-19.1-by-7.9-inch (HWD) Boombox 2 comes in black or camouflage. The built-in handle lets you carry it to the backyard, rooftop, or car trunk. It’s enormous and hefty. It can withstand 3.3 feet of water for 30 minutes thanks to its IPX7 classification. We don’t recommend this because Bluetooth doesn’t operate underwater, but the speaker can be soaked and work.
The Boombox 2 resembles its predecessor—a grille-covered cylindrical enclosure with a big handle. Dual 30-watt, 0.8-inch tweeters and dual 40-watt, 4-inch woofers provide 50Hz to 20kHz sound behind the grille. Two big passive radiators on either end of the speaker boost bass. Power, Bluetooth connectivity, play/pause (this button can skip forward a track with two pushes but not backward with three), and volume plus/minus buttons are on the speaker’s front. Partyboost links the Boombox 2 to other JBL speakers to emit the same sounds. A front-facing status LED strip displays battery life.
Impressive Performance and Portable Audio Excellence
On tunes with heavy sub-bass, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the Boombox 2 delivers. Though the DSP thins the lows, the bass doesn’t distort at high levels (this speaker can go loud). The response is robust even when the DSP thins the bass to reduce distortion. Bass depth is most significant at moderate to high levels with minimal DSP interference.
Cost Revealed and Release Date Announced
CES 2020 introduced the JBL Boombox 2, which will be available in April. Boombox 2 costs $449.99 / £399.99 (AU$650). The Boombox 2 offers a higher max volume than our favorite water-resistant speaker, the UE Wonderboom 2, which costs $69.99 / £89.99 / AU$129. The bigger, more powerful UE Megaboom 3 costs $200 / £170 / AU$300 and may be coupled with other Ultimate Ears speakers.
Iconic Design Meets Powerful Audio
The JBL Boombox 2 looks very identical to its predecessor. If we put them side by side, it would have been hard to tell them apart, but JBL modified a few accents to do so. One side of the JBL logo has an exclamation mark, while the bottom of the handle is colored. These are subtle clues because JBL sticks to black and camo, leaving no possibility for other unusual colors. The Boombox 2 is very identical in size and weight. It weighs 13 lbs and is 10.1 x 19.5 x 7.9. The same robust material holds the huge cylindrical design together in the handle. Inner intestines are known, too. Two passive radiators on the ends, twin 20mm tweeters, and two 4-inch woofers beneath the hood provide enormous sound. JBL employed components similar to the newer Bluetooth transmitter, which we’ll discuss later.
Unleashing Powerful Sound and Seamless Connectivity
JBL had to reduce Boombox compatibility by using a separate Bluetooth transmitter. Connect+ enabled that model to play music concurrently or in stereo as left and right channels with other JBL speakers. It and any Connect+ app connection are gone, leaving the Boombox 2 in a distinct connectivity world. PartyBoost employs different protocols. Thus, you couldn’t combine this Boombox 2 with a friend’s original Boombox. This speaker can only link with PartyBoost-enabled speakers, unlike Connect+. The previous model included Indoor and Outdoor settings, but JBL removed them. The business claims its tuning and audio engineering make it sound amazing in both contexts, eliminating the need to switch. Unfortunately, there’s no adjuster or option to alter speaker sound. You receive what you hear.
Unleashing Powerhouse Performance with Deep Bass
JBL kept the Boombox 2 IPX7 to withstand rain and splashes. Submerge it in clear water for 30 minutes, and it can float, but it tilts forward, muffling the audio. Bluetooth doesn’t work well underwater, so keep it on land. Did we mention its volume? As a beast for its size, we liked that it handled distortion when we ramped up the volume. Bass is dominant here, but we were delighted by its background music performance when we played late-night jazz at lower volumes outside at night. We attempted several songs as we rocked out, undoubtedly confusing our neighbors. Listening to Killer Mike’s Don’t Die, which was so loud, was like making a megaphone statement.

Should I Buy JBL Boombox 2?
Boombox is the best-sounding large/loud Bluetooth speaker I’ve used. This speaker is comparable to Zagg’s $400 Braven XXL/2, which is no longer available. Except for the bottle opener, the JBL is superior at $400. The Boombox 2 is like a movie sequel that reuses 90% of the narrative and scenes. It’s not horrible, but it’s better for Boombox novices than longtime users. Like its predecessor, this is a social speaker. Playing music for a small crowd outside is better than indoors. For $450, its limited focus is a hefty price to pay to make events lively, but if you need ample audio at your next outdoor party or camping trip, this is the speaker to purchase.
