In the very competitive electric toothbrush industry, the ProtectiveClean 6100 is unremarkable. It removes a fair amount of plaque, but its battery life and user interface could use some improvement. Given its performance and features, it is pricey.

Performance Breakdown
Cleaning Performance
The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 effectively cleans your teeth and removes most plaque. It does encounter some difficulty in accessing difficult-to-reach locations, such as the interior of the teeth or the back molars. Not only does it clean just as well as other top models, but it cleans even better.
Comfort
Comfort-wise, the 6100 is a mixed bag. Some people may like it better because it’s quieter. If you brush too hard, the pressure sensor will lower the strength, which will make the experience even more relaxing. Some people, especially those with sensitive gums, thought the frequency of the vibrations was too high, though.
Ease of Use
You can choose between Clean, Whiten, and Gum Care on the ProtectiveClean 6100, which has three different strength sets. It’s not always intuitive to change settings and levels. It might take users a while to get used to the choices.
Battery Life
The battery lasts for about 23 days on a full charge. This isn’t bad, but it’s also not great either. The Philips Sonicare 5100 and similar models have better battery life. On day 19, an alarm for low battery power goes off.
Maintenance and Performance

Our time with the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 was rather enjoyable. The sonic vibrations do a fantastic job cleaning your teeth and leaving you with a fresh-feeling gob; brushing performance is outstanding. Like most electric toothbrushes, the ProtectiveClean 6100 features a built-in timer that will pulse every 30 seconds to motivate you to go to the next quadrant of your teeth. After two minutes of cleaning, it will turn off to indicate that you are finished brushing for the time being. There is also a pressure sensor on the brush. Brush too hard, and this will cause a pulse and red light on the brush handle advising you to ease off.
Cost and Availability
The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 cost £149.99 when it first came out in April 2018. Lots of shops still sell it, even though it’s been out for three years. In fact, you might even find a small discount on it. The Philips website, for example, says it costs £125. Pink, white, and black are the three colors of the Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100.
The ProtectiveClean 6100 comes with two W2 Optimal White brush heads made by Philips. These heads have a hair layer on the outside for cleaning between teeth and a whitening and polishing pad on the inside. A pair of these three-month new brush heads costs about £16, but we found a pack of four online for about £23 (about £5.75 each). Do some price comparison shopping to find the best deal on a case of eight. It should cost around £36 (or £4.50 per unit).
How to Follow the Steps?
- Press the power button to turn the brush’s power on and off.
- The button lets you choose between Clean, Whiten, and Gum Care.
- After turning it on, you can adjust the strength by pressing the mode choice button.
- Set the timer for two minutes and continue brushing for that duration.
- Watch out not to use too much force when brushing after the movements have stopped.
- Rinse the brush head with water after each use to remove any toothpaste residue.
- Just put the toothbrush back on the base after each use to charge it.
The Bottom Line
Even though it cleans well, the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 isn’t as competitive as other models because it’s expensive and the battery doesn’t last long. Being able to choose from different cleaning modes and having a pressure monitor is nice, but it’s not worth the price. For those looking for a cheaper choice, the Oral-B Pro 1000 or the Philips Sonicare 5100 are better at what they do and easier to use.
