The GeForce GTX 980M mobile graphics chip from NVIDIA came out on October 7, 2014. The chip is built on the GM204 graphics processor and was made with a 28 nm process. The N16E-GX-A1 version of the chip also supports DirectX 12. This makes sure that the GeForce GTX 980M can play all games without any problems. The GM204 graphics processor has a die size of 398 mm2, and it has 5,200,000,000 transistors on it. It’s odd that Clevo uses two different kinds of GTX 980. The normal one has a TDP of 180 watts and is one type. It is the same size as its smaller high-end brothers, the GTX 980M and the GTX 970M, and it takes up the same amount of space in the MXM spot. On the other hand, there is the 200-Watt version, which we tried and which covers a port of the P870DM’s secondary MXM slot (the barebone is also available with two GTX 970M chips in SLI).

As expected, the GeForce GTX 980 should be able to run faster than the 200-Watt model, which needs better cooling. Nvidia’s core clock ranges from 1064 to 1190 MHz, which is close to the standard for desktop GPUs, which is 1126 to 1216 MHz. GPU-Z says that when the P870DM barebone is working hard, the GPU can reach 1228 MHz, which is a bit higher. As we did in our review of the famous GeForce GTX 960M, we’ll focus on what gamers care most about speed.First, the GeForce GTX 980 can also run the Unigine Heaven 4.0 test at 78.7 fps on the Extreme setting. With this score, the new top model is right behind two GTX 970Ms, which get 85.1 fps in SLI mode (+8% @Schenker W724).

It’s 36% faster than the GTX 980M (58 fps @MSI GT72S-6QE) and 152% faster than the GTX 965M (31.2 fps @Medion Erazer X7615). The Bottom Line

The mobile GTX 980 should perform admirably on laptops equipped with one of Intel’s unlocked mobile K-series processors. It looks like a system based on that combo may be really powerful. Laptops with Nvidia’s GTX 980 will be useful for more than just desktop gaming.

Many of these systems are planned to include multiple display outputs, meaning that a notebook can power a triple-monitor surround gaming setup. This GPU should be able to handle the minimum requirements for the Oculus Rift, making these computers the “world’s first VR notebooks,” in Nvidia’s words.

If the VR craze takes off, I can see them selling a lot of them just for demos, and even more if they come as part of a bundle. A Video Game as a Result. Any high-end GPU will suffice at the “standard resolution” of 1920×1080, but the GTX 970M provides the best price-performance ratio.

The GTX 980M, like the GTX 965M, is expensive for what it offers. The entire 1920 x 1080 resolution with maximum details and several anti-aliasing options is easily handled by the GTX 980. High-resource games like Assassin’s Creed Unity, Crysis 3, and Watch Dogs run smoothly at ultra settings.
