Nintendo dominated handheld gaming with the Gameboy, DS, and Switch. Handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally have recently become popular. Cloud gaming and a tablet-like Android experience are exclusive to the Logitech G Cloud.

Cost and availability

In the UK and Europe, the Logitech G Cloud costs £324.99, which is $349.99 in the US. It came out in October 2022. We don’t know how much it costs or if it’s available in Australia. The handheld will be out in May 2023, so it should arrive soon. The Nintendo Switch OLED and the standard 64GB Sony Deck cost the same or more. This one costs $399.99 / £349.99.

Performance

Logitech G Cloud

Your streaming service dramatically affects how well the Logitech G Cloud works. Many hours were spent playing Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which was sent to me by the PR firm for review. Some of the best games can be played without the system, and I like how easy it is to start up any Xbox Series X game on the platform. However, the experience could be better. When I played any game on Xbox Cloud Gaming’s computers, there was a 0.5-second lag.

The bad video quality made things worse. As roads and demons blended, faster games like Forza Horizon 5 and Doom Eternal were almost impossible to play. Excellent quality viewing through Nvidia GeForce Now. The picture quality was better than Xbox Game Pass, and the input delay was only nine frames, which is about the same as in multiplayer games with low-plying. The downside is that there are few games to choose from. You can connect to Steam, GOG, Epic, and Ubisoft and play games you own. That’s a great thought, and Cyberpunk 2077 and Rayman Legends worked just like they would on real hardware. There’s also bad news. For $19.99/£14.99 a month, you can play games that you own with this plan. Because of this, you need a lot of PC games.

Display

The 7-inch screen on the Logitech G Cloud is beautiful. The Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck only have 720p and 800p resolutions, while the ROG Ally has 1080p. While it’s the same as Steam Deck’s 60Hz refresh rate, ROG Ally’s 120Hz is faster. 7 The G Cloud has a screen. The colours are beautiful and pop great, but less bright than on an OLED machine. The colors are beautiful and pop great, but less bright than on an OLED machine. There are two stereo speakers below the desk. Even though they are loud and mean, they are placed in a way that makes them easy to turn off by leaning the machine against something. There’s a headphone jack on the bottom for more private sound. It is said that the G Cloud’s 6,000mAh battery should last for 12 hours “under normal gaming conditions.” The machine was tested and found only to need a few charges over a long period.

Computer software

Logitech G Cloud

Some devices have had Android 13 for a few months, but the Logitech G Cloud still has Android 11. I’m unsure if most Android users will like the shiny new features. The G Cloud can be used in “Tablet Mode” to experience Android 11 on a tablet. But “Handheld Mode” makes it feel more like a console by adding a dedicated launcher like the Nintendo Switch home screen and several tiles that fall horizontally in order of most recent use. I must connect the device to my Google account before choosing between Handheld and Tablet Modes on the first boot. Xbox Cloud Streaming (Beta), Nvidia GeForce Now, and Xbox and Steam Link are all installed so you can start streaming locally. Along with the four-game options, the tablet has Google apps that can’t be deleted, such as Chrome, Calendar, Contacts, Maps, and more.

Gaming

Since this gadget is designed for cloud streaming, your experience will depend on network speeds and location. My testing network had 300Mbps download and 20Mbps upload speeds to stream games via WiFi. The preloaded Xbox Cloud Streaming program was my primary tool for testing games. Finding a game to play was easy in the menus, and it recognized the built-in gamepad. After 20–30 seconds of connecting to Xbox servers to launch a game, I was in.

The Verdict

Spending so much time with a specialized cloud device taught me that not all games are meant to be streamed to a small screen—for instance, Doom Eternal hit or around 60 fps with no control delay. Scaling down to a 7-inch monitor and streaming games over WiFi reduces clarity, making much of the text and symbols unreadable. In Deathloop and Halo Infinite, artifacting was expected as it strained to keep up with the action.
