The HP Omen 17 is the only high-end 40 series GPU laptop we’ve tested so far this year, giving it a distinct advantage over the competition and, oddly enough, making it an attractive pick even for desktop gamers seeking to upgrade, at a price of Rs 3,03,501. This may change as other laptops in the 40 series become available, but until then, the HP Omen 17 is an excellent choice.

In-Depth Analysis

The new 2023 model of the HP Omen 17 combines the computational muscle of a 13th-generation Intel Core i9-13900HX with the graphics muscle of a monster RTX 4080 GPU, making it the most potent gaming laptop we’ve tested to date. It’s a quantum leap from the best gaming laptops we tried a year ago. While the package’s price tag of Rs 3,03,501 is certainly high, it’s worth noting that the included hardware is impressive enough to entice even dedicated gaming desktop users.

Gaming

OMEN By HP 17-Ck2004TX Review

We have not tried any other laptops with an RTX 4080 yet this year, but the HP Omen 17 will be the first. The TGP of 175 watts makes this the most powerful GPU NVIDIA currently supports. The newest triple-A titles can be played smoothly at full 4K resolution. It may not have NVIDIA’s top mobile GPU (that honor goes to the 4090), but it easily outperforms the MSI Raider GE67HX, which has a 3080Ti, in every synthetic gaming benchmark we’ve run.

The disparity in synthetic GPU benchmark scores between the two laptops is highlighted by a direct comparison. We have utilized the Time Spy and Fire Strike benchmarks from 3DMark to evaluate DirectX 12 and DirectX 11 performance, and the Port Royale benchmark to evaluate DirectX Raytracing.

Performance

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 (12GB VRAM) and the 13th-generation Intel Core i9-13900HX processor are the brains and brawn, respectively, of this gaming rig. The laptop has 1TB of SSD storage space and 32GB of RAM running at 5600 MHz. Faster Windows startup and game loading speeds are the result of plenty of RAM and an SSD.

We played games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Control, and Grand Theft Auto V for many hours while we had access to the laptop. The laptop did well with older but still popular games like GTA V, but its hardware was put to the test with newer, more demanding games.

The Grand Theft Auto V benchmark tool did tests in 5 different game modes, and the lowest average FPS was 174.8, while the highest average FPS was 185.74. While Grand Theft Auto V mostly performed as expected throughout gameplay, we did experience a few frame drops after two to three hours of nonstop action.

Conclusion

The HP Omen 17-ck2004TX aims high, as it is a laptop that provides high-end gaming performance. The gaming laptop succeeds in its goal of providing seamless gameplay, but the strain it puts on the system to achieve this is obvious, notably in the form of shorter battery life. Thus, it appears to be a laptop that may only be of interest to a subset of gamers.

As a portable gaming device, the Omen 17 holds its own. Omen 17 is the best choice for enthusiasts who want to try out the 13th-gen Core i9 and RTX 4080 combination in a laptop shape but aren’t afraid of a steep price tag.
