Dell’s laptop crown jewel, the XPS 13, receives all the credit. It makes sense—the laptop is sleek, powerful, and has a gorgeous display. Not everyone wants or can afford that much for a laptop. The Dell Inspiron 14 7000 seeks to satisfy people who wish to pay less without sacrificing quality. Mostly, it works. The 7415 has tremendous performance, a reversible design, and Windows 11 support out of the box. The machine isn’t flawless. After all, the XPS 13 costs more for a reason other than aesthetics. Does the $800+ Inspiron 14 7415 2-in-1 justify its price? I used the laptop to find out.

Design

Dell New Inspiron 7415

Although thicker and heavier than an XPS, the Dell Inspiron 14 is nonetheless an attractive laptop. Most can fit it in a rucksack or handbag because it’s not thick. The Inspiron 14 7415 is 0.64 inches thick, somewhat thicker than the XPS 13. It weighs 3.43 lbs, which is heavier than other competitors but not too much. Thin bezels give the Inspiron 14 7415 a contemporary look, which is one of its greatest features. The top bezel is thicker than the XPS 13, yet it looks amazing. The AMD model we’re evaluating is exclusively available in Mist Blue. Overall, I like the colour palette. It looks great—close to black with a hint of blue.

While the keyboard has some flex, the laptop appears well-made. The port selection is decent but not great. Left is an HDMI port, USB-A port, and USB-C port; right is another USB-A port, MicroSD card slot, and headphone jack. An extra USB-C port or two would have been excellent because the present one is regularly used for charging. Overall, the Dell Inspiron 14 7415 2-in-1 looks and feels amazing. It needs additional ports, but otherwise, this is a quality system.

Price

Our review device has an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U CPU, 16 GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, an AMD Radeon GPU, and a 1920 x 1080p touchscreen display. The Dell Inspiron 14’s most powerful AMD setup costs $999. Those wishing to save money might consider the $799 AMD basic model. This model has an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 1920 x 1080p touchscreen.

Display

Dell New Inspiron 7415

The Dell Inspiron 14’s 14-inch 1080p touchscreen is deficient in several ways. The screen colour and brightness were drab, and the touchscreen lacked the “wow” element I wanted. The touchscreen was sluggish and insensitive. I had to tap the screen several times to control my open windows or press on basic icons. Spiderman: No Way Home was watchable on the Dell Inspiron 14 despite its poor screen. Dark sequences in Dr. Strange’s cellar were hard to see, while bright scenes were OK. I wish the colours were brighter, especially in the mirror scene. Small features like fall leaf colour distinctions were lost when Spiderman was blasted into the realm in New York.

Keyboard/touchpad

Typing is fantastic on the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1. Comfortably spaced keys provide ample travel for tactile sensation. This is wonderful news for me, a typing professional. The keyboard has some flex, but it’s hardly noticeable in daily usage. The laptop’s palm rest is large enough to keep it comfortable. The touchpad is good but not great. High-end Windows laptops are challenging the industry-leading Apple trackpad. Despite a lot of click travel, the touchpad is snappy and precise. Tapping to click is my regular method, so it didn’t bother me.

Battery and performance

Dell New Inspiron 7415

Inspiron 14s come in Intel and AMD variants; however, the 7415 is AMD. Our Inspiron 14 includes an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. It costs just over $1,000. The laptop was powerful enough for most use scenarios, including heavy multitasking. Most professionals who desire a computer for email, online surfing, and productivity programs will be satisfied. Excellent battery life on the Dell Inspiron 14 7415. The machine readily lasted a full workday and a few additional hours. This may be due to the lower-brightness display and 1,080p resolution. No matter the cause, the Inspiron 14 7415 has exceptional battery life.

Conclusion

If you want a good laptop without the XPS 13 price, the Dell Inspiron 14 7415 is a good choice. Design, power, and portability make it an excellent travel machine. It’s ideal for individuals who want more screen space than a 13-inch laptop but don’t want a 15-inch.
