Dell’s mainstream Inspiron brand strives to combine performance and pricing, but the 15 3000 fails. Dell had to make concessions to lower this machine’s price to $329 (it begins at $299), but too many are deal breakers. Low performance, a dull display, and an awkward keyboard plague the 15-inch laptop, but it has good battery life and build quality. Competition in this price bracket offers more.
I seldom purchase inexpensive computers. Since I’ve had bad experiences with affordable laptops, I stick to mid-range to high-end ones. The trackpad, screen, or absence of critical functions has always turned me off. The Dell Inspiron 15 3543 was on sale when I needed a cheap laptop for my mother-in-law. I just had a few days to get everything up, but long enough to test it. Read on for my assessment of its competitiveness.

Exceptionally Well-Equipped and Sturdily Built for Optimal Performance
The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3511) has 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Intel UHD graphics, and an Intel Core i3-1115G4 CPU. It has half the RAM of a respectable laptop and low-end graphics, but its processor is better than the Celeron CPU in cheaper laptops. Our entry-level test system costs $323, but you can upgrade to 12GB of RAM, Iris Xe graphics, and 512GB of storage. How to pick the finest laptop CPU.
A Closer Look at Dell 15 3000 Series Keyboard and Trackpad
The keyboard works well. Essential travel is excellent; keys are neatly spaced, and everything is in place. In my experience, this is a standard Dell keyboard. Sadly, it’s not illuminated, but computers this cheap shouldn’t be. The keys seem reasonable, but I was surprised to find a high-quality keyboard on this model. This keyboard should suit touch typists. Flex was minor in my model, but it was not a problem. I liked the keyboard and have seen worse. Despite its poor trackpad, this laptop was usable. Right and left clicks are at the bottom corners of this clickpad. In my experience, it tracked well with acceptable precision and sensitivity.
I once felt jumpy, but I couldn’t describe it. Most touch motions functioned adequately. I repeated the action thrice, but it was due to the trackpad size. Size is the trackpad’s downfall. Comprehensive, but too tall. I always needed more space on top and bottom. Closing Windows 8 applications on the trackpad was tricky. Thank goodness for touchscreens.
Unveiling the Dell 15 3000 Series Screen Excellence
This variant has a 15.6-inch 1366 x 720 touchscreen. Twisted nematic (TN) LCD panels are typical in laptops at this price. Still, the viewing angles are more significant than expected. The side-to-side angles exhibited minimal colour distortion, but the writing was visible. However, vertical viewing angles were terrible, with colours altering and writing fading or blurring. It’s still better than some of the other TN panels I’ve seen recently, including last year’s Lenovo Y50 and other inexpensive Chromebooks (one of which had a 10° viewing angle).
As a touchscreen, the glass panel is glossy. Outdoor laptop users will suffer from reflections. Worse, the maximum brightness is 166 nits. Backlight cannot outweigh strong ambient lights or sunshine. Other specifications include average TN panel colour accuracy—the 70:1 contrast ratio must be fixed. The black level was 2.23 nits, or dark grey at full brightness. The white point was 7100K.
Impressive Performance and Robust Hardware
Microsoft Office and Internet browsing are accessible on this laptop’s i3-5005U Broadwell CPU. It’s slower than the i5 and i7 CPUs but faster than the Atom and Core M processors. The lack of turbo-boost clock speed keeps the clock at 2.0 GHz, unlike the i5. In power saving mode, TDP decreases by 50% to conserve battery life, while clock speed drops to 600 MHz. Power saving mode was sluggish and hardly bearable. It works for movies.
I used this laptop briefly to browse the Internet, download drivers, and run benchmarks. Thanks to the superb Wifi performance, I maxed out my 50Mbps internet connection near my router. I didn’t notice any significant slowdowns while browsing the web; however, several programs were more extended to install. The sluggish hard disc in this system may delay most tasks. I would spend $70-80 to replace the hard disc with an SSD. UX would likely be almost twice as friendly.
Heat, speakers, noise
As I had to finish this in two days, I didn’t have time to test heat and noise. Despite installing programs and using the Internet, I noticed no significant heat. It’s a little warm but less toasty than an i7 ultrabook. This unit cools well, and the fan noise isn’t noticeable. If anything, I heard the rotating hard disc more often. My house is sometimes loud, so your mileage may vary with the fan sounds. There is nothing unique about the speakers—they’re loud enough for daily use but not enough to replace your audio player. They lack bass and sound tinny at high volumes. It might have been my driver’s, but I observed a long delay in sound when I triggered an event. Due to the delay, I only heard the second part of notifications.
Battery life
I use the factory “Power Saver” power profile, 30% brightness (60 nits), wifi off, Bluetooth off, and a standard definition movie looped at full screen with the volume muted to test the battery. I start the clock when disconnected and stop it when it self-shuts off. I was impressed that the 40Wh Inspiron 15 lasted 7 hours and 11 minutes before going off.
Pricing and availability
This i3 model is available at Amazon, Newegg, and other stores. Prices are now $350–$400, but check the links for updated information. The $100-more i5 model is accessible through those sources. If you need speed, purchase the i5, although most budget-conscious people can get by with the i3. The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 (3511) is a decent 15-inch cheap laptop. It fixes many of the 3505’s shortcomings, and with Windows 11, the 3511 is already ahead of the competition. The lack of a USB-C connector, poor speakers, and weak display are all downsides, but it’s still one of the best 15-inch budget laptops under $400.

Should I Buy a Dell Inspiron 15 3000?
This laptop has mixed reviews since I’ve used high-end computers for so long and had high expectations. It’s a good laptop for the price. $350 buys you a computer with an Atom or Celeron processor, 2GB of memory, a terrible screen, and a shoddy design. This bundle has an i3, 4GB RAM, a lovely screen (with touch), and a sturdy frame. This laptop is excellent for online browsing and minor office applications, but I need more horsepower. The touchscreen and DVD burner are advantages over many inexpensive computers. Some of you still need DVD burners, but the options are limited. This may be a suitable option for you.
