Since the lockdown, our lives have gotten pretty much dependent on the internet. Although there have been major changes in almost all aspects of life yet the two domains that seemed to have gone through the most changes are – schools & offices. Since online classes and the work-from-home situation started, we all have been adapting to these changes by changing our internet connections to broadband and buying better laptops, also buying headsets to attend the online meets without any obstacles. One drawback of this is that not everyone is much tech-savvy and can deal with all this equipment and its setup. One major issue that we are going to address in this article is how you can use a headset mic on your PC.

Before we start off by giving you details, let’s see why you need this guide. Not all the headsets that are available in the market will start working by simply plugging in. There are some headsets that need you to do a proper setup and follow some simple steps in order to make them work. To ensure that while setting up the headset, you don’t mess up any other setting on your PC it is best to know what to do beforehand. With that being said, we hope this guide is helpful for you.

  • Setting the headset as the default device

If your headset is not working then you should first make sure that the headset is set as the default device on your pc. Many people forget to set up their headset as the default device on the pc and then just conclude that the headset or probably the connection port of their pc is defective. Here is how you can set the headset as the default device on your pc:

  1. Ensure that the headset has been plugged in probably to the connection port of the pc. Since we are talking about headsets with one jack in this article, the connection is simple and does not need any explanation.
  2. Headsets with one jack are simple to connect as there is no confusion of which jack should go in which port. Also, headsets with one jack will be supported on any pc configuration. It is for headsets with two jacks(one for the headset itself & one for the mic) that you will need PCs with two connection ports.
  3. Right-click on the sound icon on the taskbar(by default, on the bottom right corner). A list of options would show up; click on the “Open Sound Settings” option. Click on Sound Control Panel.
  4. Under the “Choose your input device,” choose your headset as the default device, and that’s it; your headset has been set up as the default device on your pc.
  • Enabling the headset

After having set the headset as the default input device on your pc the next thing that you have to do is enable the headset. To enable the headset, we have two ways:

  • Using the device properties:

    1. Open Settings. Search for the “Systems” option and click on it.
    2. Click on “Sound.” There you’ll find a section “Input,” under that select the “Device Properties” option.
    3. There you’ll find a checkbox named “Disable.” By default, it should be unchecked, but if it is checked, clear it to enable the headset.
  • Using the manage sound devices:

    1. Open Settings. Search for the “Systems” option and click on it.
    2. Click on “Sound.” There you’ll find a section “Input,” under that select the Manage Sound Devices” option.
    3. Under “input devices,” search for the headset’s names and click on it.
    4. Click on the enable option to enable the headset.

Using this option, you can enable more than one device at one time. How cool is that?

  • Adjusting the headset’s volume

Do you feel that the headset’s volume is a bit low? You can fix that following just a few simple steps. Here’s what to do:

  1. Open Settings. Search for the “Systems” option and click on it.
  2. Click on “Sound.” There you’ll find a section “Sound Control Panel,” click on it.
  3. Once the Sound Control Panel opens, you’ll find a “Recording” tab. There it will ask you to select a device to modify its settings, choose your headset and then click on “Properties.”
  4. When the Properties window opens, click on “Levels,” and there you’ll see the option to adjust the headset’s volume. Simply drag the volume control to your preference hence adjusting the volume level of the headset.
  • Giving access to apps to the headset and the mic

So we are done with setting up our headset, enabling it, and adjusting the volume levels. Let’s go back; why are we doing this again? Attending meets, gaming, other similar stuff. So if the meet apps and the games or the discord can’t access the headset or the microphone, then what’s the point of doing everything we just did. Hold on, just one more step, and you will be good to go. Next, we are going to give certain apps on your PC access to use the headset and the mic.

  1. Click on Start and search for “Privacy Settings.”
  2. Under the “App Permissions” section, search for “Microphone option” and click on it.
  3. There. Click on the “Change” button.
  4. You will see a list of all the apps on your PC, select which all app you want to give access to the headset and the mic, and turn on the toggle near those apps’ names.

Conclusion

In this article, we discussed how we can connect a headset mic to a PC, set it up, enable the headset, modify its settings in order to change the volume levels. We also discussed how to grant access to the headset to apps on your PC. We hope this article was helpful for you.
