Unwinding from your workplace is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance and reducing stress. No highly efficient entrepreneurs or employees can claim to be working 200 hours a week without some sort of meaningful way to unwind and refresh their energy for the next hustle. But unwinding doesn’t always mean running off to a vacation or going for a massage. It’s possible to unwind but at the same time create value and meaning. If you’re facing burnout from work, and want to step away for a bit, yet be productive and create value, these are the activities for you.

  • Attend business masterminds with people from similar backgrounds

A concept in the world of entrepreneurship, a mastermind is usually a focused group of a few people in similar industries who spend a few days together relaxing, pursuing leisure but also just networking and sharing ideas and bouncing ideas off each other. Many interesting startups and business gurus have been born out of business masterminds. Bostjan Belingar of Hustler Marketing, a top email marketing agency, has been a part of a couple of such masterminds and swears by it. “I met some of the brightest people at the mastermind. Yes, it was expensive, but with it came ideas that I still think about, being in the clique with some of the most exclusive communities, gaining a client, and meeting a few friends who’ve still kept in touch.”

  • Partake in Mindfulness and Meditation:

Take a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness or meditation. This can help you relax, improve focus, and reduce stress. There are plenty of apps and online resources to guide you. You can also find online classes for yoga and meditation that enable you to do it right from the comfort of your home or even the bedroom.

  • Engage in a value-producing hobby:

Pursuing a hobby you’re passionate about is not only a great way to unwind but also to be able to create something of meaning. Whether it’s painting, playing a musical instrument, gardening, or any other interest, it can be a fulfilling way to relax. As Myntra founder Mukesh Bansal talks in his podcast, his way of engaging in a meaningful hobby while creating fitness startup Cult was to write 500 pages of a book every day. He eventually ended up publishing 3 books.

  • Volunteer or Help Others:

Sometimes, helping others can provide a sense of fulfillment and perspective. As someone with a successful career, you’re probably in a blessed situation of helping out — it could be in terms of time or money or both. Some of the most successful people in the world are also some of the most charitable. Bill Gates spent most of his post-Microsoft days wanting to help and make the world a better place and has funded thousands of small and medium organizations and NGOs working across the globe. Use your skills to build something for a cause. Say you could leverage your tech knowledge to build a database of organizations in a certain sector such as child welfare or you could use your networks and communities to undertake a local community project such as getting the street animals in your area vaccinated and neutered.

There are these and multiple other ways to continue to be a high-functioning and productive individual even when you’re not putting in the grind at an office. But let this not mislead you into thinking that there’s anything with simply “taking a break’. If that’s what your mind and body need, so be it. It’s always good to sometimes take a step back and understand yourself and your purpose better. Whether it’s reading a book or writing it, whether it’s traveling for leisure or a mastermind, what matters is that you achieve that refresh that your overworked self needs.
