The XPS 13 is very attractive. It has the slimmest and smallest design of any midrange laptop, with a 13.4-inch 16:10 screen packed into a body that doesn’t look much bigger than an 11-inch Chromebook. This is not a Chromebook, though. The XPS 13 has a high-end look because it is made of machined blue aluminum and is only half an inch thick.

The XPS 13 is easy to take on regular trips and daily commutes. Even though it looks high-end, the XPS13 9315 2 in 1 Laptop is middle-of-the-road ultraportable. With Dell’s current discount, it starts at $749, and even with the upgrades on our test system, the price stays at a reasonable $1,149. Our test system has the base CPU, which is a 12th-generation Core i5.

It has 8 GB of RAM and a Core i5-1230U. a 13.4-inch screen that can’t be touched. Even though it’s nice that the default storage option is a 512GB SSD instead of a smaller 256GB SSD, we wish Dell would have gone beyond 8GB of RAM and offered at least 16GB. The 16GB memory upgrade on our test model adds a hefty $150 to the price.

Brightness and height are the best things about the XPS13 9315 2 in 1 Laptop’s screen. It is rated at 500 nits and has a 16:10 aspect ratio. At 16:10, the screen is taller than a 16:9 screen, and the extra space in the vertical direction makes the 13.4-inch screen feel bigger. As the size of the panel gets smaller, the effect of having a taller aspect ratio becomes more important. At 16:10 or 16:9, a 15- or 16-inch screen feels roomy, but a 13-inch screen can feel crowded at 16:9 if you scroll through web pages and documents a lot. The panel’s brightness against its 500-nit rating and found that at its brightest, it reached about 425 nits.

The Surface Pro 9 has a 13.3-inch screen, while the XPS 13 2-in-1 has a 13.0-inch screen. Both screens have the same resolution of 2880 x 1920. That makes Dell’s screen a little bit clearer. The IPS panel on the XPS13 9315 2 in 1 Laptop was brighter at 480 nits instead of 409 nits, and the contrast was much better at 1,840:1 instead of 1,050:1. The colour range was about average for high-end laptops, and the accuracy was very good, with a DeltaE of 0.81 (less than 1.0 is suitable for professional work).
