Threads is finally starting to test ActivityPub integration: Mark Zuckerberg
In a post on Threads, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the platform is starting to explore the possibility of making Threads postings accessible on Mastodon and other platforms that accept ActivityPub.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta Platforms’ Threads will test postings from Twitter accounts to Mastodon and other ActivityPub platforms. Meta launched Threads to make it easy to use with open, interoperable social networks. Zuckerberg said making Threads interoperable will give users more interaction options and help content reach more people.
Mastodon, a decentralized, user-driven social media site, is similar to Threads, an alternative to Elon Musk’s Twitter. Mastodon uses ActivityPub to let users create distinct social media experiences.

“We plan to work with ActivityPub to provide you with the option to stop using Threads and transfer your content to another service,” the business announced in July.
Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of Meta Platforms, declared on Wednesday that Twitter posts will be tested on Mastodon and other ActivityPub platforms via Threads. In July, Meta introduced Threads to ensure its compatibility with open and interoperable social networks.

Threads, which reached 100 million sign-ups in five days, will launch in Europe in December, according to media sources.
Meta-owned social networking platform Threads has begun testing its intentions to share posts on other platforms.
“Starting a test where posts from Threads accounts will be available on Mastodon and other services that use the ActivityPub protocol,” explained Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday. “Interoperable Threads will give people more interaction options and help content reach more people. I’m optimistic.”
Meta launched Threads in July, intending to make it compatible with ActivityPub, an open social networking protocol, so that it could be used with Mastodon, WordPress, and other programs. Zuckerberg said Threads planned to reach 1 billion sign-ups after 10 million in seven hours of its July 6 launch.
In contrast, Twitter, now X, had over 300 million members. “There should be a public conversations app with 1 billion-plus people on it,” Zuckerberg wrote on Threads on July 6. Twitter has had this chance but has failed. Hope we will.”
In an interview with PYMNTS’ Karen Webster on July 13, QED Investors partner Amias Gerety said the new iOS and Android platform took advantage of Meta’s natural scale and was released in more than 100 countries. Everyone in the content game is saying, “Wait, I rank as the 15 millionth most important Twitter content creator.” “If I jump to Threads now, I could be the 500th most important,” Gerety remarked.
On July 28, three weeks after its inception, Threads lost over half its users and released its first big update. “We are considering implementing additional ‘ retention-driving hooks’ to encourage users to come back to the app. For example, we may make it so that significant Threads are visible to Instagram app users,’” Meta chief product officer Chris Cox said.
