Instead of using Western AI solutions like ChatGPT and Google, Ola wants to see more people use indigenous AI solutions like Krutrim.

With the launch of Krutrim, one of India’s first homegrown AI models, ride-hailing giant Ola has taken a major leap beyond its cab services and entered the AI (Artificial Intelligence) domain. During a live event, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal introduced Krutrim, highlighting the fact that it is based on Indian languages and data and has local roots.  Instead of using Western AI solutions like ChatGPT and Google, Ola wants to see more people use indigenous AI solutions like Krutrim.

Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder of Ola, launched his artificial intelligence (AI) startup Krutrim Si Designs on Friday, unveiling Krutrim, its foundational large language model (LLM). Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are at the head of the increasingly competitive artificial intelligence race, and Krutrim is the next entrant. For its generative AI applications, it has been constructed using the most comprehensive representation of Indian data for all Indian languages. In Bengaluru and San Francisco, a group of top computer scientists trained it.

Also powered by this model is Krutrim’s conversational AI assistant, who is proficient in numerous Indian languages and understands natural speech. AI will define economic and cultural paradigms of the future. It is imperative that India takes the lead in artificial intelligence if it aspires to be a world power. All LLMs, or artificial intelligence models, are now trained mostly in English. However, ethos, context, and cultural values are all conveyed through language. The AI models simply can’t grasp the multilingual and multicultural milieu of India. We need to train it on our own unique data sets.

India must also be able to access it, and the pricing must prioritize the Indian market. Worker and investor output will both rise in an AI-driven economy. During the business event, Aggarwal stated that this would cause the Indian technology industry to take a nonlinear trajectory, positioning it to become a worldwide hub for knowledge, a frontrunner in scientific breakthroughs, and a medium for cultural expression.

The Indian government’s artificial intelligence system, Krutrim, serves the nation’s 1.4 billion residents, he continued. We are thrilled to introduce Krutrim, the first comprehensive AI computing stack in India. It takes into account our distinct cultural background and helps us stay connected to our heritage while we look to the future. Krutrim will have the most Indian data representation because to our India-first cost structure, which will allow us to develop innovative models beyond LLMs in other industries. Because of this, India’s economy will surpass all others in terms of productivity, efficiency, and citizen agency.

The Krutrim LLM family—named “artificial” in Sanskrit—includes the upcoming Krutrim Pro and Krutrim base—both of which will feature multimodal capabilities, expanded knowledge, and other technological enhancements for inference.
