On Thursday, Gujarat minister Rushikesh Patel said his administration was “very hopeful” that Elon Musk-led Tesla would choose the state to build a plant and was in discussion with the company. Patel answered questions about press reports that the US-based electric vehicle producer was developing a Gujarat manufacturing unit.

Tesla’s entry may be announced soon. I hope Tesla comes to Gujarat. As with Tata, Ford, and Suzuki, we will welcome it and provide all required support, Patel told Gandhinagar reporters. In June, Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk met Narendra Modi in New York. After meeting the PM, Musk announced he would visit India in 2024.
In September, Gujarat’s Additional Chief Secretary (Industries and Mines Department) S J Haider claimed the Centre is in touch with Tesla about a manufacturing site in India. He stated that Gujarat would approach the company immediately to ensure its involvement in plans.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said Tesla wants to buy USD 1.9 billion in Indian components this year, up from USD 1 billion last year.
