Britney Spears Appears to Respond to Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’ Performance With Cryptic IG Message
Pop icon Britney Spears posted a cryptic message on Instagram post-Justin Timberlake’s performance in Las Vegas on ‘Cry Me a River’. Fans speculate controversy.
The cryptic message
On December 13, Justin Timberlake graced the stage in Las Vegas and performed his hit track “Cry Me a River”. The performance garnered a reaction from none other than his ex-girlfriend, pop icon Britney Spears.
Two days later, Britney took to Instagram and shared a cryptic video of a leopard. The caption of the post appeared to be a diss from her side on Timberlake’s controversial performance, saying “Psss [sic] I never mentioned how I beat him in basketball and he would cry … no disrespect !!!”.
Britney’s comment appeared to be a reference to Timberlake’s earlier cheeky comment he made before his performance, saying, “No disrespect, ain’t we all just entertainers? I feel stupid and contagious. Yeah, we’re all just entertainers.” To make up his point, Justin mixed Jay-Z’s 2013 popular songs, Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Holy Grail” with altered lyrics.
The controversy
The hit track by Timberlake is sparking more controversy after Brtiney’s memoir The Woman in Me where she has discussed the video. Spears asserted in the book that in the video, there is “a woman who looks like me cheats on him and he wanders around sad in the rain.”
Besides the feature, she even observed that Justin portrayed their split in the wrong light where it featured her as a “harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy.”
Justin’s performance was not only attacked by his ex-girlfriend but by Britney’s fans as well. The fans took to social media and made comments supporting Spears. One wrote “This is giving the free entertainment on those cruises,” while another commented “Sir. It was all about the disrespect.”
Justin has sung this song before at Dave Chappelle‘s 50th birthday party in August and there too made a remark, “They told me not to do this song no more,” he said at the time. “F*** that!”
Their History
Britney and Justin’s relationship dates back to 1999 and ended in 2022. Britney’s memoir, which came out in October spilled the beans on their relationship with shocking bombshells like Britney having to go through an abortion during their relationship.
She wrote, “Justin wasn’t happy about the pregnancy, he said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”
